Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of thecinnamon tree. It belongs to the laurel family (Lauraceae).
The tree is native toSri Lanka(formerly Ceylon), theMalabar Coast of India, andMyanmar (Burma).
It is also cultivated inSouth Americaand theWest Indies.
The cinnamon tree typically grows in moist, well-drained soils and rarely reaches more than15 meters (49 feet)in height.
Its thick, simple leaves have smooth margins and are usually oval. Young leaves are red and mature to a deep green.
The small bisexual flowers are greenish to yellow and are borne in clusters.
The fruit of the cinnamon tree is a dark drupe.
